As most of you know by now, I LOVE to read! I generally have several books going at any one time. People have asked me how I can do this and keep them all straight. So, let me briefly explain.
- First thing in the morning – I read inspirational stories, Christian biographies, and/or a devotional for about a half an hour.
- Before starting work, when I take a break between work projects or at lunch, and in the evening – I learn best by reading. So I usually have a business building book and/or a personal growth book going, and I pick them up whenever I have a few minutes or more to read.
- Bedtime – Fiction! And I read with my ears. I have suffered for years with insomnia. Now, at bedtime, I stick in the ear buds, find where I was in the audiobook I’m listening to, set the timer to go off in 30 or 45 minutes, and listen until I fall asleep, which I almost always do.
- At the Gym & While Driving – I listen to business or personal growth podcasts and audio books.
I told you, I really LOVE reading!
In addition to always reading, I am always recommending books to people and often give them as gifts. Recently, a blog-reading friend suggested I include occasional book reviews on Rehearsing RetirementTM. So, today I launch the Book Review category. I hope you’re inspired to read a few of the books I’ll review here.
I begin with a book that I mentioned recently in the post, Starting a Business is Hard – but Oh, So Worth It! As I related, Hilda the Book, by Coach Jennie was instrumental in helping me get out of my own head, and I highly recommend it!
Hilda: Tackle Your Inner Naysayer,
Get Out of Your Own Way, and Unleash Your Badassery
What’s keeping you from achieving your goals? From saying yes to your dreams? From leveling up? – If you’ve ever asked yourself these questions, you’re asking the wrong question. The right question is ‘Who’s keeping you from…?’ And the answer is Hilda.
You probably don’t realize it, but you’ve already met Hilda. It’s her voice you hear whispering, “You don’t have what it takes,” or “You should wait until…” when you have a big idea. If you’ve ever had a goal that you didn’t reach or a dream that didn’t come true, then Hilda won. But that stops here and now because Coach Jennie Mustafa-Julock has written a book outing Hilda and giving you the tools to shut her down.
As someone who has learned a ton from Jennie and her cathartic shoves (read creative coaching style), I was thrilled to be included on her book launch team. I read the advance copy in two sittings and LOVED it! My print copy is filled with notes in the margins and highlighting, and I’ve purchased several copies to give as gifts.
Like Coach Jennie, the book is honest, funny, and not at all coachy. Jennie openly shares how she’s both fallen victim to and learned to overcome Hilda’s influence. In addition, in her ten years as the Audacity Coach, Jennie has helped countless clients defeat their inner naysayers, and many of them have allowed her to share their stories as well.
Most importantly, in her book, Hilda, Tackle Your Inner Naysayer, Get Out of Your Own Way, and Unleash Your Badassery, Jennie shows you how to recognize when Hilda is taking over. She provides you with tactics and strategies you can use to shut her up. And she shoves you (cathartically) to finally take those next steps that will allow you to achieve your goals, say yes to your dreams, and level up.
It doesn’t matter what you want to do; Hilda is going to show up. What are you going to do about it?
Now it’s your turn.
Are you a procrastinator? Do you second guess yourself? And then later want to kick yourself? Do you find yourself making excuses to yourself? (Crazy, right? – By the way, these are all ways that Hilda sidetracks you and keeps you from achieving your dreams.) So what are you dreaming about?
